Why Clarity Even Matters
Diamond clarity is simply how free a diamond is from internal “birthmarks” (inclusions) and surface marks (blemishes). These tiny features can be completely invisible… or they can make a diamond look cloudy and even weaken it.
At Da Vinci Jewelry Design, clarity is never about chasing a “perfect” grade. It’s about:
How it looks to the naked eye (on your hand)
How it performs in real light
How it fits your budget and story
What Is Diamond Clarity?
When gemologists grade clarity, they look at the diamond under 10x magnification and assess:
Number of inclusions and blemishes
Size of each feature
Location (center/table vs near the edge)
Type (feather, crystal, cloud, needle, etc.)
Color/contrast (dark vs faint)
What Is a Diamond Clarity Chart?
A diamond clarity chart is a visual roadmap of the GIA clarity scale the industry standard. It lists the 11 clarity grades, from absolutely clean to very included:
- FL → IF → VVS1 → VVS2 → VS1 → VS2 → SI1 → SI2 → I1 → I2 → I3
Diamonds higher on the chart are rarer and more expensive. Lower on the chart = more inclusions and usually a lower price. The trick—especially for our value-focused lab-grown shoppers—is to find the sweet spot where the stone looks amazing, but you’re not paying for microscopic perfection.
The GIA Diamond Clarity Scale
FL & IF – Flawless / Internally Flawless
FL (Flawless): No inclusions, no blemishes under 10x.
IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions; only tiny surface marks
- Reality check: Ultra-rare, huge price jump, almost zero visible difference from lower grades in normal viewing.
Da Vinci POV:
Best for clients who emotionally need “the best of the best” or collecting.
For most Conscious Couples, the money is better spent on cut, design, or carat instead.
- Inclusions are extremely difficult to see even under 10x by a trained grader.
- Visually indistinguishable from flawless in normal wear.
Da Vinci POV:
Great for high-end buyers who want luxury clarity without paying FL/IF premiums.
For most DVJD lab-grown clients, still more than needed—VS often looks identical on the hand.
VS1 & VS2 – Very Slightly Included (DVJD “Sweet Spot”)
Minor inclusions that are small and hard to find at 10x.
Almost always eye-clean in the 1–2ct range when well-chosen.
- Excellent balance of beauty, rarity, and value.
DVJD POV:
For most couples, VS1 -VS2 in a well-cut lab-grown diamond is often the best clarity value.
You get a “clean” look + strong resale perception of quality, without overpaying for grades you can’t see.
SI1 & SI2 – Slightly Included
- Inclusions are noticeable at 10x and sometimes visible without magnification, depending on size, type, and location.
Many SI1 (and some SI2) stones can still be eye-clean with careful selection.
Da Vinci POV:
For budget-conscious buyers who prioritize carat size and design, a well-selected SI1/SI2 lab-grown diamond can be an excellent value.
Our gemologist focus is on avoiding inclusions in the center/table and any that might affect durability (big feathers, crystals near the girdle).
I1, I2, I3 – Included
- Obvious inclusions that are usually visible to the naked eye
- Can impact sparkle (stone looks cloudy) and durability (large or deep inclusions can be weak points).
Da Vinci POV:
Typically not recommended for DVJD engagement rings unless there’s a very specific, clearly discussed reason and the client understands the trade-offs.
We prefer to optimize carat/design within SI/VS rather than drop into I-grades
How Clarity Fits Into the 4C’s (And Where to Spend)
Clarity is one of the 4C’s: cut, color, clarity, and carat. The big takeaway for DVJD clients:
Cut → has the biggest impact on sparkle and light return.
Carat → affects how large it looks on the hand.
Color → affects overall warmth/whiteness.
Clarity → matters until you can’t see the difference with your eyes.
Given that lab-grown diamonds offer more carat and clarity for the same budget, most people tend to:
Maximize cut first
Aim for VS1/VS2 eye-clean clarity
Adjust color and carat to get the right look and budget
How to Read a Clarity Plot on a Certificate
Most grading labs (GIA, IGI, etc.) provide a clarity plot a diagram showing where inclusions live inside your diamond.
We show clients how to decode that plot in plain English:
Red vs green marks: Often used to distinguish internal vs external features.
Symbols:
Dots = crystals
Lines = feathers
Hazy shapes = clouds
Position:
Right under the table? More noticeable.
Near the edge? Often hidden by prongs or less visible.
Da Vinci clarity coaching (what we do in consults):
Highlight which inclusions are actually visible without magnification.
Explain if any features are durability risks (e.g., feather reaching the surface).
Show hand photos / 360° videos so clients can connect the plot to the real stone.
FAQ - Clarity
Do I need a flawless diamond?
Almost never. A well-cut VS1 – VS2 will usually look identical on the hand while costing much less than FL/IF
Is clarity different for lab-grown vs natural?
The grading scale is the same. Lab-grown diamonds can show slightly different inclusion types (e.g., metallic inclusions, growth patterns), but we evaluate them with the same clarity standards and always show you magnified visuals.
What does “eye-clean” mean?
At Da Vinci, “eye-clean” means no inclusions visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance, under normal lighting, without straining.
Should I prioritize clarity over carat?
Up to the point where the diamond is eye-clean and structurally sound, clarity doesn’t need to be “maxed out.” Most clients are happier putting extra budget into cut and carat, with VS1/VS2.
